Kierland FlowRider Selected as Official Launch Location for 2013 FLOW Tour USA
As the newest FlowRider venue, Kierland FlowRider has been selected as the official launch location for the 2013 FLOW Tour USA. With The Westin Kierland’s connection to the world-class travel destination of Phoenix/Scottsdale, as well as being the only Resort in the World to offer the FlowRider attraction, it proved to be the ultimate site to launch the 2013 FLOW Tour. Kierland FlowRider is a superior location for growing the sport of flowboarding, offering a hands-on approach to instruction, developing a SHRED School designed to advance riders skill, and even hiring a “Wave Master” to oversee the operation, furthering the development of boardsport enthusiasts among Resort guests. Kicking-off the tour on Friday, May 31, 2013, Kierland FlowRider will be the first of thirteen scheduled stops on the 2013 tour. The all-day event will include FlowRider activities, bodyboard and flowboard division competitions, and the opportunity to see some of the best flowboarding skill and innovative new tricks by the top pro flowboarders.
The FLOW Tour is flowboarding’s premier competitive tour featuring some of the world’s best riders. Tours are held in Asia, Europe, & USA. Considered to be the grass roots of flowboarding, the FLOW Tour provides a platform for riders to enter competitions at any level and learn the fundamentals en route to the top. The FLOW Tour has traveled across the United States for the past ten years, to many of the 55+ FlowRider locations, developing the level of flowboarding competition today.
SHRED School
SHRED School will be available to guests of the Resort each Saturday afternoon, Memorial Day – Labor Day, meant for experienced riders who are ready to learn some new skills, cool tricks and take their flowboarding to the next level. For guests of The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa, SHRED School includes individual instruction from the Resort’s very own Wave Master, Steve Richardson. SHRED School is a held at Kierland FlowRider in a small group setting of five surfers per class. Steve will show burgeoning ‘Barneys and Bettys’ or experienced ‘Big Kahunas’ how to carve and kick waves, do 360-degree spins, kick flips and other professional tricks to becoming a Flowboarding ‘Icon.’

Kierland FlowRider Summer Surf Camp
This summer, Kierland FlowRider at The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa will offer an all-day, weekly Surf Camp, led by the Resort’s “Wave Master,” Steve Richardson. Surf Camp is designed for kids ages 8 – 12 (at least 52” tall) with a focus on having FUN on Kierland FlowRider with personalized coaching from the “Wave Master,” Steve Richardson.
Each day will consist of ride time to learn and improve bodyboard and flowboarding skills, participating in surf-related activities, and discovering FUN ways to stay healthy and active. Each morning begins with Flow-ga, a specialized FlowRider yoga, developed with Resort fitness director, Steve Heller for optimal stretching and flexibility as it relates to the sport of flowboarding.
Aspiring flowboarders will receive a Kierland FlowRider Surf Camp rash guard and bone-carved Maori surf necklace (just like the one Wave Master Steve wears!) to wear during the week, and as a souvenir to keep. Kids will enjoy this active camp experience while creating lifelong memories on the Kierland wave this summer. At the end of the week, parents are invited to watch the young flowboarders show off their progress and skills learned from their week at Kierland FlowRider Summer Surf Camp.

Daily FlowRider Contest & Lifeguard Demo
Contest will run from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend
Just because your session is over does not mean your FlowRider time is complete! Come back to the FlowRider area and show off your new moves! After the completion of the final session of the day, we will host a complimentary FlowRider contest and lifeguard demo for our guests.
Lifeguard Demo
Immediately following the final session of the day, the Wave Master or a lifeguard who is proficient on the FlowRider will give a 10-minute flowboarding and bodyboarding demo showcasing some more advanced maneuvers. As guests often request seeing a lifeguard ride and we do not want to cut into their hour time during the day, this will be the opportunity for our guests to enjoy a demo each and every day
Daily FlowRider Contest
Following the final session of the day, our guests who have previously ridden the FlowRider that day, will get a chance to ride in a complimentary flowboard/bodyboard contest. The contest is designed to be a fun, non-competetive way for our guests to show their newly learned skills on the FlowRider. Guests will register for the contest during the 10-minute lifeguard demo. There is no pre-registration and the contestant must be present at the time of registration. The contest will be limited to the first 30 guests that sign up on a first come, first serve basis beginning immediately after the final session of the day.
Format
There will be two divisions: 11 and under as well as 12 and older with a winner for each division.
Every rider will get a one-minute run to showcase their skills on the FlowRider. Time will begin when the rider touches the surface of the FlowRider. They may choose to bodyboard, flowboard or combine both. Basically, they have one minute to do whatever they want to impress the judges and crowd. They will be given a five second countdown when their session is over.
Judging
Judging will be based on two categories with a 0-10 point scale for each (0=lowest score, 10=highest score). Scores will NOT be released to ANY rider or parent. The categories are TECHNICAL (The rider, who performs radical, controlled, unaided maneuvers with speed, style, and variety while utilizing the entire ride and time, will be given the highest scores) and FUN (The rider, who is the most creative, shows a unique style, and creates the most fun overall atmosphere will be given the highest scores). In the case of a tie, riders will be given a 30 second run in a surf-off. The winner will be the contestant with the most points in their division.
Awards
The winner of each division will be announced and will receive a Kierland FlowRider t-shirt and a Wave Master Maori surf necklace at the completion of the contest.

Digital Kids Zone SUMMER CAMPS!
The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s Digital Kids Club program was developed specifically for one of the most difficult age groups to entertain, “tweens” – ages 8 through 14. The Digital Kids Club, as part of the Resort’s FUN Program, features individual sessions throughout the year, as well as unique 5-day digitally-based camps during the summer: Stop Motion Movie Making, Computer Video Game Design, Produce Your Own Morning Show, and Media Madness! Budding movie directors capture footage and experiment with special effects, video game enthusiasts learn about design and creation, inspired news anchors experience the world of reporting, and creative juices flow from learning animation and comic book design! The award-winning FUN Team at The Westin Kierland Resort is known for its innovative Family FUN program offering the most comprehensive, exciting family experience in Arizona. The FUN Team is responsible for creating and implementing activities and programs that appeal to both parents and their children alike. Through the Family FUN Program, a special check in area is set up just
for families called the “Kierland Mining Co.” There, they receive a
passport called “The Compass: A Trailblazer’s Guide to The Westin Kierland”
containing a scavenger hunt that allows them to discover the resort’s property,
while learning about Arizona history and culture. This family activity turns in
to a special souvenir for each child to take home with them.

Kierland Family Challenge
The Westin Kierland’s FUN Team has created an event for the whole family to enjoy together. Saturday evenings, families meet the FUN Team at the Resort’s OK Corral to join in on a series of challenges in which they will be competing against rival families for a grand prize! Starwood Preferred Guest members are invited to join in the FUN, and guests who are interested in becoming an SPG member can sign up upon arrival for the Challenge. All ages can get involved with the individual challenges such as Mud Pie Eating Contests, Balloon Pop, Bobble Head and more! Be the family with the most points at the end of the Challenge to be awarded Starwood Preferred Guest points towards your next vacation!
RaceZone- Kierland Speedway…Build. Design. Race.
Guests will design, build and assemble their own race vehicle in The Westin Kierland’s “Racers Pit Area” and then race it on the Kierland Speedway. Here, the driver’s seat is finally theirs!
Kids Club
The Westin Kids Club is the place to be for kids aged 4-12. Kids Club offers activities themed around the essence of Arizona. Children enjoy arts and crafts, games, Resort tours, a splash in the pool as well as scavenger hunts. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the Kierland Mining Co. at 480-624-1268.
FUN Arts and Crafts
Kids of all ages are invited to join the FUN Team in a special arts and crafts project that they can take home as a souvenir of their Kierland Vacation. Kids in the Kitchen
“Kids in the Kitchen” is the area’s first interactive culinary program in which kids get to don “chef’s whites” and work with the Resort’s expert Kierland culinary team. Designed for children ages 5 – 12(although all ages are welcome), this 90-minute program covers all areas of the culinary process from start to finish: safety, cleanliness, cooking/baking and, of course, eating! The session also includes child size apron decorating and a tour of the many kitchens inside the Resort as well as other “back of the house” locations. Dates vary seasonally.
Kierland Kampfires, an Arizona S’mores Roasting Experience
The Westin Kierland Resort takes traditional s’mores roasting to a whole new level. Families can enjoy the usual fun of roasting s’mores around a campfire, and now have a unique Arizona twist to it that creates a brand new memory. Arizona s’mores roasting takes place every Friday and Saturday, affording families the perfect opportunity to relax and unwind from their busy day of swimming, shopping, and sight-seeing.
The Phoenix Zoo is here!
The FUN Team has partnered with the Phoenix Zoo to bring the animals to you! Guests of all ages will enjoy the 60 minute, interactive Desert Connections program where guests are introduced to the animal life of the desert. From the blistering sun to the scorching sand, discover how animals have adapted to live in this environment. This Phoenix Zoo presentation includes discussions about camouflage, nocturnal vs. diurnal, habitats, and food and water conservation. This program takes place every Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day as well as major holiday weekends.
OK Corral
The whole family will want to visit the “OK Corral.” This designated FUN space is adjacent to the Adventure Water Park and offers hours of FUN with lawn chess, basketball and outdoor game tables. Take a break from the water for a watermelon eating contest, special arts and crafts project, or the Kierland Kampfires.

Adventure Water Park at The Westin Kierland
The Westin Kierland Resort’s Adventure Water Park offers more than 575,000 gallons of water fun including a 900-foot lazy river and a 110-foot-long waterslide. Float along the lazy river without a care, or break the record on the waterslide with how many times it can be ridden in one day! Be one of the first to flowboard in Scottsdale on the new Kierland FlowRider boardsport simulator! Next to the Adventure Pool is the children’s play area, which features pop-jet water fountains and a shallow pool for small children and babies. - Advance reservations for FlowRider can only be made if you have booked the Summer FlowRider Package
- The advance booking window will be 30 days
- If you have not booked your reservation on the Summer FlowRider Package, advance reservations will not be available
- If you have booked a resort stay not through the Summer FlowRider Package, we will be happy to set up a FlowRider reservation for you during your stay based on availability
- If you have already booked a reservation for FlowRider not through the package up until March 31, it will still be honored
Scottish Bagpipes at Sunset
In keeping with the Resort’s “Essence of Arizona” theme, the Scottish Traditions at The Westin Kierland serve to pay homage to the contributions of the Scottish immigrants to the development of Arizona’s railroads, mines and towns.
The “Scottish Pipes at Sunset” is the original tribute to the Scottish im
migrants where guests and families are encouraged to gather around the fire pit every evening at the Resort’s Dreamweaver’s Canyon to enjoy the haunting sounds of the Scottish Bagpipes with Michael McClanathan.
